My Mother's Eyes

There's a rare storm brewing in Phoenix tonight

The thunder is roaring and drowning out

the sound of my nightly therapy jazz session

and I can watch the lightning through

the blue curtains that

Mom made

because I asked her to

some many months ago

I picture her now

and how we watched storms

together

out of the old house front door

in our front row seats

at the private showing

with no one else in the theater

to cough or talk

or break the spell

And she'd whisper and point and smile

Always with such quiet grace

Flowing all about her in soft and gentle waves

this humble lovely woman

that I'm honored to call my mother

Heart of a Saint

and soul of a Queen

living in the eternal midnight

of Cinderella

knowing nothing

of how beautiful she is

Shedding her glorious light into the

darkest black

of all the hidden underground rooms

That I have stumbled into

Guiding me out always with

her blazing lantern lit by love

Gasping and escaping into

the fresh crisp air of redemption

And I'm trying to do her honor

And I'm trying to make her proud

As I hopefully gaze into the waters and waves

desperately trying to cast a reflection

of even half the woman as she

and Mom,

I know even you get tired

as even an Angel's wings need repairs

but you've never once betrayed me

and you've never left me to cry alone

and you've taught me

how there are no little things

and how everything is magical

and how animals quiet the nightmares

and nature brings peace to the soul

and how never to expect back

what I give

but to give

all that I have

and to find satisfaction in myself

and to find my peace from within

My husband wrote once

That his wife has her mother's hands

But as the rain and the thunder and lighting

realize they are in the desert and leave

I see my eyes reflected in the window...

I see your eyes looking back at me.
